The Youth Smoking Prevention (YSP) department engages in ongoing research to ensure that our work is based on a solid foundation.

The Youth Smoking Prevention (YSP) department engages in ongoing research to ensure that our work is based on a solid foundation.

Our research has included:

  • staying up to date on the latest developments in the field of reducing underage tobacco use, including related fields such as positive youth development;
  • conducting research to support the development and evaluation of our underage tobacco use prevention programs and communications;
We also use research results from numerous external studies to help us better understand the issue of youth tobacco use in the U.S.

For the past nine years (February 1999 through December 31, 2007) the YSP department also commissioned an external research firm to conduct the Teenage Attitudes and Behavior Study (TABS). During that time, TABS measured the prevalence of youth tobacco use (including cigarette smoking) in the continental United States and aided YSP in understanding what may differentiate adolescents who smoke or use other tobacco products from those who do not.  This information served to complement existing national studies and was used to help guide our YSP department's strategy, communications and grant program priorities.

Visit the TABS website for detailed information about the study methodology, research questionnaire and results.
