We set goals for reducing the impact of our business on the environment in key areas using 2004 data as a baseline. Several years later, we can report significant progress against key performance targets.
Philip Morris USA identified both air emissions and energy usage as focus areas. As part of our ongoing effort to reduce our environmental impact, we are pursuing the following objectives:
- promote conservation through demand-side efficiency
- consume cleaner forms of energy
- pursue renewable energy sources
- promote energy security
We set out to reduce both our greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of energy we consume by 10 percent. The charts on this page detail our progress in both areas. A wide range of efforts as well as production declines have contributed to both a 15.1 percent reduction in Greenhouse Gas (CO
2e) emissions and a 9.7 percent reduction in energy usage between 2004 and 2008. These efforts include:
- conversion to more energy-efficient lighting systems
- enhanced efficiency of steam return systems and air compressors
- improvements in how we operate HVAC systems, boilers and incinerators
Our goal is to secure reliable and environmentally sustainable energy resources for our facilities ─ resources we can use in the cleanest and most efficient manner possible to support our business activities well into the future.
